چکیده

The critical zone (CZ) represents the most-shallow subsurface, where bio-, hydro-, and geospheres interact with anthropogenic activity. To characterize thickness lateral variations of CZ, here we focus on Eastern Betic Shear Zone (EBSZ), one most tectonically active regions in Iberian Peninsula. Within EBSZ, Guadalentín Depression is a highly populated area intensive agricultural activity, characterization CZ would provide valuable assets for land use management seismic hazard assessments. achieve this, have conducted an interdisciplinary geophysical study along eastern border to architecture shallow subsurface. datasets used include Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), first-arrival travel time tomography, multichannel analysis surface waves (MASW). combined help constrain high-resolution structure subsurface image fault systems four transects. resulting models allowed us interpret first ~150 m has revealed: (i) variable CZ; (ii) relationship between topographic slope; (iii) differences associated geological units. Our results method studying faults, complementing previous based paleo-seismological trenches, can be improve assessment regions.

Multiscale geophysical imaging of the critical zone

Details of Earth’s shallow subsurface—a key component of the critical zone (CZ)—are largely obscured because making direct observations with sufficient density to capture natural characteristic spatial variability in physical properties is difficult. Yet this inaccessible region of the CZ is fundamental to processes that support ecosystems, society, and the environment. Geophysical methods prov...

Glauconite and phosphate peloids in Mesozoic carbonate sediments (Eastern Subbetic Zone, Betic Cordilleras, SE Spain)

AB STRACT: Glauconite and Ca phosphate peloids occur in Jurassic and Cretaceous bioclastic carbonate rocks from pelagic swell sequences of the Algayat-Crevillente Unit (Subbetic Zone). The size and morphology of the peloids are controlled by the bioclasts. The glauconite in both stratigraphic positions is K rich (>0.69 atoms p.f.u.) and shows well-defined 10 AÊ lattice fringes. Poorly crystalli...

Holocene slip rates along the Owens Valley fault, California: Implications for the recent evolution of the Eastern California Shear Zone

One of the largest historical earthquakes in California occurred in 1872 along the Owens Valley fault located along the western margin of the Eastern California Shear Zone. New paleoseismic and optically stimulated luminescence data are the first to bracket the timing of the pre-1872 rupture to between 3.3 6 0.3 and 3.8 6 0.3 ka. These data yield an earthquake recurrence interval between 4100 a...

The Gastropod Fauna along the Bushehr Province Intertidal Zone of the Persian Gulf

The gastropod fauna of Bushehr Province intertidal zone at the Persian Gulf were identified following an investigation starting spring 2009 until winter 2011. Bushehr coastline is a 673.62 km stretch along the northern and northeastern coast of the Persian Gulf. Sampling took place from Deylam at Bushehr-Khuzestan borderlines, extending southeastward through Genaveh, Bushehr, Bolkheyr, Kab...
